An unidentified gunman opened fire in front of the Empire State Building in New York Friday, killing two and wounding nine, according to a police source.

The gunman was shot and killed by police, the New York Police Department reported, as cited by CNN.

The victims were shot shortly after 9 a.m. on the sidewalk on Fifth Avenue outside the building in Midtown Manhattan.

According to witnesses, the gunman was "shooting indiscriminately at people."

According to reports of Fox News, a law enforcement source claimed the shooter was a disgruntled employee who had been fired Thursday from his job at a location either inside the Empire State Building or near it.

Police have sealed off several streets in the area.

According to New York City police, the incident is not terrorism related.
