The first ever case of a woman carrying out a successful pregnancy after cervical cancer surgery was recorded in the city of Pleven, northern Bulgaria.

A 32-year-old woman that had undergone the surgery gave birth to a healthy child after in vitro insemination at the Pleven Medical University Hospital.

The baby-girl was however born well ahead of the term, which was in October, and weighs just 1,200 grams and will be guarded in an incubator.

Up to now, in the world there have been only 16 cervical cancer surgeries which have managed to preserve the patient's uterus, with 2 of them performed in Bulgaria.

The post-cervical cancer mother in Pleven was among the more than 350 surgeries performed with the help of a Da Vinci robot at the Oncogynaecology Clinic.

She had one ovary and one Fallopian tube removed, but her uterus was left intact.
