EU Population Trends: Bulgaria Sees Largest Decrease
As of January 1, 2023, the European Union (EU) has a population of 448.8 million people. Germany is the most populous EU country, with 84.4 million residents (19% of the EU total),
Bulgarian parents, whose kids are suffering form cancer, have enthusiastically embraced the idea for a new specialized hospital, pledging their support and help to the generous donor.
"We can be very useful to one another in our mission to battle the terrible disease," a father of a sick girl told bTV channel.
The parents complained they face many problems in terms of treatment, attitude and red tape.
"All procedures that the children undergo are very stressful. Even when a blood sample for tests has to be taken from their body, " another father shared.
The surge in optimism that there is a way out of the vicious circle came in the wake of a generous donation by a wealthy Bulgarian businessman, whose little daughter died of cancer a few years ago.
The tragic story of the little girl named Lia and her father, who has made it imperative to remain anonymous, emerged from a transcript of the government's meeting last week and moved the whole country.
Lia was a promising talented ballet dancer, who was forced to bid adieu to the stage after being diagnosed with cancer at the age of 10.
She died at the age of 15 and had one final wish – she did not want any more children to die of cancer.
The tragic events left an incurable trauma on her father, who set up a foundation for saving children from cancer and named it after her late and beloved daughter.
Now he wants to donate BGN 5 M for constructing a new and modern hospital for children with cancer and his dream is about to come true.
"As early as five years ago he told me about his wish to build a small, perfectly equipped and cozy hospital for children with cancer. Now his dream is about to come true. The design of the building is ready. The location has been picked. The plan is finally underway," explains Prof. Dragan Bobev, director of Pediatric oncohematology in Sofia, which is part of Isul hospital.
The new hospital will be designed to meet the highest international standards in the treatment of children, suffering from cancer. It will be located in the campus of Lozenets hospital in the eponymous district in the capital Sofia, where Lia spent her last days.
Construction works are scheduled to start within a month.
