Bulgaria sweltered through one of its hottest day on Sunday as the heat wave that has baked it for weeks sizzled relentlessly on, but a respite is just round the corner, weathermen say.
The heat will subside on Monday and temperatures will go down by 3-5 degrees Celsius. A spell of showers can be expected on Monday evening, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Code Orange alert for dangerous heat was declared for nine Bulgarian regions on Sunday by the National Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, BAS.
Code Orange for heat is effective for the regions of Blagoevgrad, Ruse, Veliko Tarnovo, Targovishte, Yambol, Sliven, Stara Zagora, Haskovo, and Lovech. The mercury in these regions climbed to 38 - 40 degrees Celsius.
Code orange means intense weather situations with potential damage, injuries and casualties.
The rest of Bulgaria was under Code Yellow.
Code Yellow means potentially dangerous weather, where the forecast is not for unusual meteorological events, but requires people to exercise caution.
