Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov is in favor of imposing compulsory religious education in the country's schools, Bishop Gavrail from the Lovech Bishopric has told the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency.
Borisov has asked experts from the Ministry of Education and members of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church's Holy Synod to prepare legislative amendments that will pave the way to obligatory religion classes in schools, the Bishop says.
However, the amendments are not ready yet, since the Education Ministry experts believe it is "too early" for religious education to be introduced, according to Gavrail.
Schoolchildren who do not want to learn religion will have the chance to attend ethics classes instead, the Holy Synod has proposed. The others will have to choose between several religious beliefs.
Already in 2011, Borisov declared he supports making religious education in schools mandatory.
