Turkey is grateful to Bulgaria for its support of the country's bid to join the European Union and for its eased visa rules for Turkish citizens, Turkish EU Affairs Minister Egemen Bagis has stated.

Bagis believes that Bulgaria is "one of Turkey's best friends."

During his visit in Sofia, he noted that the two countries have a great potential to deepen their bilateral cooperation.

Upon asked about Turkey's relations with the Cypriot EU presidency, Bagis noted that such relations would not be necessary, as his country is communicating mainly with the European Parliament and the European Commission.

On Thursday, the Turkish EU Affairs Minister met with Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov.

Mladenov said he hoped the two countries will deepen their cooperation within the energy sector.
