Egypt's ousted President Hosni Mubarak, 84, was declared clinically dead on Tuesday, shortly after being moved from prison to a military hospital in Cairo.

On Tuesday evening, Mubarak suffered cardiac arrest and a stroke in prison and he was immediately taken to hospital, according to reports of Egypt's state news agency MENA.

Adel Saeed, the official spokesman of the Egyptian prosecutor, was quoted by the CNN as saying that Mubarak's heart had stopped and the doctors had used electric shocks and CPR to resurrect him.

"He is now on an artificial respirator and doctors from the armed forces and International Medical Center will inspect him," Saeed told journalists.

On June 2, the former President of Egypt was was given a life sentence over his role in the killing of nearly 800 demonstrators during anti-regime rallies last year and was placed in a prison medical ward.

His health had been reported deteriorating ever since he was ousted as president of Egypt in February 2011.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of protesters poured into Tahrir Square to voice their opposition to a move by the ruling military council to assume new powers.

The protest was organized by the Muslim Brotherhood, which is also claiming victory for its candidate Mohammed Mursi in last weekend's presidential elections.

Ahmed Shafiq, a former prime minister under Mubarak, has also said he has won.

As Egyptians voted, the military dissolved parliament and claimed all legislative power for themselves in a move interpreted as "a military coup" by activists.

The final results of the presidential elections are expected to be announced on Thursday.
