Mitt Romney won Tuesday night the Republican presidential nomination, following a primary in Texas, where he collected more than 70% of the vote.
Romney will challenge incumbent President and nominee of the Democrats, Barack Obama, in the November election.
The Republican presidential hopeful easily secured more than enough votes to pass the threshold of 1 144 delegates needed for the nomination, which will be officially announced at the party convention in Florida in late August. His prevailing was expected for weeks now, after his rivals withdrew or suspended campaigning.
Romney, cited by BBC, said he was "humbled". He is the first Mormon from a major party to contest the presidential election. His father, George Romney, a former Michigan governor, ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination in 1968.
"I am honored that Americans across the country have given their support to my candidacy and I am humbled to have won enough delegates to become the Republican Party's 2012 presidential nominee," he said in statement.
Opinion polls show an extremely close race between Romney and Obama in November.
BBC further cites experts saying the outcome of November's election could depend on what happens in a handful of battleground states, including Colorado and Nevada, as the candidates vie for the support of independent voters.
The next question of the campaign is who Romney will pick as his vice-presidential running mate.
