World Marks 100 Years since Titanic Tragedy

World | April 15, 2012, Sunday // 12:14

The 100th anniversary of the tragic sinking of the passenger liner Titanic is being remembered in ceremonies across the world Sunday.

Commemorations take place in Britain, Canada, Northern Ireland and the United States, among others.

On the night of April 14, 1912, shortly before midnight, the Titanic hit an iceberg. Some three hours later the biggest passenger liner  of the day lay under the icy waters at the bottom of the North Atlantic.

Around 1,500 people out of a total of 2, 200 aboard perished as the ship went down. Titanic's last known survivor, Elizabeth Gladis Dean, passed away at the age of 97 in 2007.

The discovery of Titanic's wreck in 1985 and director James Cameron's 1997 eponymous Academy Award winning blockbuster renewed global interest in the tragic event.
