Bulgaria's right-wing Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) party will only agree to a coalition with ruling centrist-right GERB if it scraps the Bulgarian-Russian Belene nuclear power plant project, it has been made clear.
Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov recently named the right-wing Blue Coalition (which involves DSB and the Union of Democratic Forces) as a potential coalition partner after the 2013 general elections.
"It is vital whether Borisov will show his political stance on Belene," Ivan Kostov, leader of DSB and Blue Coalition co-chair declared Wednesday upon being asked about a potential coalition with GERB.
In an interview for the bTV private channel, Kostov pointed out that Bulgaria already produces more energy per capita than Italy. He added that the country has to take an extremely expensive credit in order to fulfill the project.
According to Kostov, a total of BGN 27 B will have to be spent on the construction of the nuclear power plant, which Bulgaria will not be able to repay in 19 years. The former PM (1997-2001) further stated that the Belene NPP would probably fail to comply with EU nuclear safety requirements.
Borisov is expected to announce Bulgaria's decision on Belene during Wednesday's cabinet sitting. The PM declined appearing in the Parliament for a hearing on the fate of the project.
