Syrians in Bulgaria, as well as Bulgarians of Syrian origin gathered in Sofia Sunday to mark one year since the start of unrest in their country.
People gathered at the entrance of the Borisova Gradina park in downtown Sofia to express support with their compatriots and call for an ousting of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.
They were carrying signs in Bulgarian, reading, among others, "Freedom for Syria," "I shall not abandon my brothers," and "Do not make me an orphan!"
Sunday's rally marked one year since pro-democracy protests started in the Syrian city of Deraa, March 18, 2011.
According to UN data, more than 9,000 people have perished in the unrest, which has escalated in what is now resembling a civil war.
Saturday and Sunday major bomb attacks were carried out in Damascus and Aleppo by what the authorities say are terrorist rebels, killing and injuring scores.
The Sunday rally in Sofia was marred by a lone Bulgarian male who attempted to assault the protesters, only to be quickly detained by police.
When asked, he only specified he has "personal motives" for his action.
