The Bulgarian government will propose legal amendments Wednesday envisaging that EU citizens shall be able to work as notaries in Bulgaria, while Bulgarians shall have the right to exercise the notarial profession in EU countries and Switzerland.
Under existing legislation, only Bulgarian citizens are eligible to practice as notaries.
The amendments to the Notaries and Notary Activities Act were triggered by a ruing of the European Court defining the nationality bar as a violation to the EC Treaty.
Apart from Bulgaria, a number of other EU Member States, such as Germany and France, will also have to change their legislation in the sphere, in order to avoid infringement proceedings, according to the statement of the Bulgarian government's press office.
