Bulgaria: Denmark Firmly behind Bulgaria, Romania Schengen Entry - Ambassador

Denmark, which took over the EU presidency on January 1, wants to see Bulgaria and Romania as close as possible to joining the Schengen Agreement, Danish Ambassador to Bulgaria Kaare Janson has declared.

On Tuesday, Janson pointed out that the events surrounding the Arab  Spring have put the Schengen system under pressure and has caused the necessity for a common European asylum system that has to meet the needs of all asylum seekers that enter the bloc.

Denmark's EU presidency will put efforts into increasing the efficiency of that common European system, the Ambassador has stated, according to dnevnik.bg.

Denmark will also aspire towards the establishment of a more dynamic European Union through generating economic growth based on innovations, Janson has revealed.

Bulgaria and Romania were expected to join Schengen in 2011 but their accession was vetoed by the Netherlands which was concerned about the widespread corruption and organized crime in the two EU newcomers.

The Netherlands is the only country still opposing and blocking the proposed Bulgarian and Romanian phased-in Schengen accession, after Finland retracted its obstruction in November.
