Winter Tourism: 1.8 Million Visit Bulgaria
Bulgaria has witnessed a bustling winter tourism season, with a total of 1.8 million tourists gracing its picturesque landscapes from December 1 to March 25
Starting Tuesday, a Bulgarian delegation, led by the Minister of Environment and Waters, Nona Karadzhova, is joining the Climate Change Conference in Durban.
The United Nations Climate Change Conference, Durban 2011, brings together representatives of the world's governments, international organizations and civil society. The discussions seek to advance, in a balanced fashion, the implementation of the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol, as well as the Bali Action Plan, agreed at COP 13 in 2007, and the Cancun Agreements, reached at COP 16 last December.
The negotiations will conclude on December 9, when the results will be presented to national delegations. The goal is to reach a global agreement on taming climate changes and finding ways to adapt to their effects.
The long term goal is to limit global warming to no more than 2 degrees Celsius on the base of the new agreement that would bind most countries in the reduction of emissions.
The Kyoto Protocol for the reduction of greenhouse emissions is seen as key in this effort. The participating countries will also agree on their commitments in the fight against climate changes, including financial ones.
Bulgaria has been involved in the international effort for limiting of climate changes since the start – it is part of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and of the Kyoto Protocol. The country will reach its goal for the first period (2008 - 2012) – an 8% reduction of emissions compared to the 1998, which is taken as basis.
As an EU Member State, Bulgaria is committed to European goals to reduce emissions by 20% by 2020, compared to 1990, and to a total 30% reduction.
The Environment Ministry stresses that Bulgaria considers preserving the market mechanism for emissions trade a very important issue, along with the already established carbon market and the creation of new mechanisms to further develop it.
Countries will also negotiate in Durban how those with excess of Kyoto quotas can use them during the next trade period.
