Fatal Crash Involving Kiril Petkov's Security Car Leaves One Dead, Woman Critical
In the Varna "St. Anna" hospital, medical staff are fighting for the life of a woman seriously injured in an accident near Aksakovo
A black BMW SUV of Bulgaria's National Security Services (NSO) was photographed by the Bulphoto agency Tuesday evening, crashing in a Volkswagen Touareg.
After media reports of the crash, the NSO press office issued an official announcement that the crash had indeed occurred at 10 pm Tuesday on Sofia's Nikola Vaptsarov boulevard when the government SUV, waiting for the light to turn green, was rear-ended by the Volkswagen with Sofia license plates. The impact had been light and occurred over the failure of the driver of the Volkswagen to "control his vehicle." He was issued a citation.
NSO stress the information that leaked to the media was incorrect and their report came only afterwards because they were waiting for the traffic police to complete their probe.
There have been a number of incidents involving NSO vehicles in the last two years.
In May, 2011, a pilot NSO car, leading the procession of outgoing President, Georgi Parvanov, and a car with Kardzhali license plates crashed at an intersection in the city. There were no reported injuries.
On February 15, 2011, the procession of Bulgaria's Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, got involved in a traffic accident on its way from Sofia to the western town of Godech.
The government-issued BMW X5 hit another car – a Volkswagen Passat with three men inside. There were no injuries, but both vehicles were damaged.
Another car from the official possession was also damaged after a fender-bender with the Volkswagen which spun around from the impact.
The Volkwagen driver insists the BMW traveled at high speed in his lane and he couldn't do anything to prevent the crash. Both drivers have been tested for alcohol and the blood probe came out negative.
This was the second accident in less than a month involving Borisov's procession – at the end of January a government vehicle hit a car when traveling to the northern city of Pleven. The crash did not cause injuries or substantial damage. The probe revealed it the accident was caused by an illegal passing of the NSO cars.
In September, 2010, the procession of President, Georgi Parvanov, was involved in an accident near the village of Malinovo, in the area of the northern city of Lovech. At the time, the Presidential Office commented there had been, indeed an accident near the procession, but NSO vehicles were not involved.
In April, 2010, at the busy intersection of the "Bulgaria" boulevard and "Todor Kabsleshkov" street in Sofia, the car, in which Defense Minister, Anyu Angelov, was riding, crashed in a vehicle passing at a green light. A toddler was injured during the crash, after the NSO car ran a red light and did not have any special markings such as a siren or flashing lights.
