The presidential and vice presidential candidates of the opposition left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, are very attractive and it would be very easy to convince the ethnic Turkish electorate to support them.
The statement was made at a late-night press conference by the leader of the ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, Ahmed Dogan, who spoke in the aftermath of the first round of the country's presidential and local elections, after the first exit polls results were released.
Dogan further said that the presidential nomination of the ruling, center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria, GERB, party, Rosen Plevneliev, absolutely does not match the DPS profile for Bulgaria's Head of State. He pointed out the president has no business working on investment projects and should take care of the image of the country before foreign partners. He was referring to Plevneliev's now-former post of Regional Minister in the GERB cabinet where he was ranked for a long time as the most successful member of the government.
The DPS leader explained party followers and supporters did not take active part in the first round of the elections with only members of the youth branch and top activists going to the polls, but promised full mobilization for the runoff where Plevneliev is going to face the BSP nomination, Ivaylo Kalfin, who is a former Foreign Affairs Minister in the Socialist-led Three Way Coalition Cabinet and current Member of the European Parliament.
Dogan stated that the results from the October 23 vote had convinced him that Bulgaria needs snap general elections.
"I was listening moments ago to what Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, had to say and I felt so saddened, tears almost filled my eyes because this is such demagogy. GERB who have the full power in the country did not score a victory in these elections – to me when a ruling party does not win at first round – this is a loss," the ethnic Turkish leader declared.
Five political formations are currently positioned to enter the next Bulgarian parliament, according to a nationally representative survey by Gallup International Balkans conducted during the early phase of the election campaign
