Nearly 900 Bulgarians Need Vital Organ Transplantations

Society » HEALTH | October 22, 2011, Saturday // 19:02

A total of 860 Bulgarian citizens are waiting for vital organ or tissue transplantations in Bulgaria, it has been announced.

The greatest number among them, 807, needs a kidney transplant, the statistics show.

"Since no organs or tissues could be harvested without the agreement of the donor's relatives, we appeal to everyone to talk with their relatives and share their thoughts on this issue. That will help them take an adequate decision should a decisive moment like this occur," Viktor Paskalev from the Bulgarian National Patients'Organization pointed out on Saturday, as cited by dariknews.bg.

"A part of you could mean the whole world for somebody else," was the official slogan for October 22, the European Day for Organ Donation and Transplantation, in Bulgaria.

In the European Union as a whole, more than 50,000 people are waiting for organ donations. Each day, on average, 12 people die while waiting for a transplant.
