Inside Bulgaria's Easter Celebrations: Traditions Passed Through Generations
Today marks the joyous celebration of Easter, one of the most significant holidays in the Orthodox Christian calendar.
Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi should relinquish office, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry has officially stated.
"It was a long process, but it marks the beginning of a new page of Libya's history. Libya's people showed real courage and dignity over the last couple of months, rising against Colonel Gaddafi's authoritative reign, decisively defending their right to live in freedom," Vesela Cherneva, Foreign Ministry spokesperson, has said.
Overnight, Libyan rebels met little resistance as they moved through the capital city to the central Green Square, quickly filled by revellers. Two of Gaddafi's sons, Seif al-Islam and Mohammed, have already been captured by the rebel forces. Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's whereabouts remain unknown.
"We demand that Gaddafi should surrender, so that fire could be stopped and a peaceful dialogue could start between everybody in the Libyan society," Cherneva declared Monday.
Bulgaria's position coincides with that of the rest of the EU. "We are witnessing the last moments of the Gaddafi regime. I call on Gaddafi to step down without further delay and avoid further bloodshed," the bloc's Foreign Relations High Representative Catherine Ashton, has said.
World leaders also say the end is near for the regime of Muammar Gaddafi and are calling on the Libyan leader to relinquish power, after rebels took control of most of the Libyan capital.
In 1999, six Bulgarian medics were detained in Libya for "deliberately infecting children with AIDS". The travesty trial of the Bulgarian medics in Libya was a clear act of blackmail from the very beginning. In 2007, Bulgaria completely wrote off Libya's debt to facilitate negotiations and obtain the release from jail of the six.
