Ghulam Haider Hamidi, Mayor of the Afghan city of Kandahar, was killed Wednesday by a suicide bomber who detonated explosives hidden in his turban.

The Mayor was in office in central Kandahar when the bombing attack took place.

Hamidi, 65, had led an active campaign against corruption, embezzlement and seizure of government plots by powerful men and some tribes in the southern province.

"Mayor Ghulam Haider Hamidi was a real person who was loyal to his people and country," Kandahar's provincial governor, Toorylai Wesa said in a news conference, as cited by New York Times.  "He knew how to do his job and dedicated his life in the service of the people. He was trying to rebuild Kandahar."

Ryan Crocker, recently appointed US Ambassador to Afghanistan, and General John Allen, the new commander of US and NATO forces in the country, both condemned the assassination.
