Stefan Ivanov, 28, a mechanic from the small town of Chirpan, who was the first to come to the rescue of the victims of the hellish bus crash in Bulgaria, which killed eight, brought to the injured nine icons of Jesus Christ.
The young man, together with his wife and daughter, visited those who survived the tragedy, some of them thanks to no other but him, at the hospital in the town of Plovdiv.
"Juliet Boneva, the doctor from Stara Zagora, kissed me and started to cry. It turned out that she was the first person that I pulled out of the burning bus on that terrible day," said Stefan, adding that he will never forget June 15.
The savior, who has been hailed as a national hero in Bulgaria, was permitted to meet even the woman, who was most severely injured and whose life is still in danger - Albena Samuil, 46, from Burgas.
"I put an icon to her bed. She was not conscious. I really hope that she will be fine," Stefan wishes.
Immediately after the crash part of Albena's skull was missing, so the doctors had to make a plastic surgery and close the hole.
An Enturtrans bus, travelling from the capital Sofia to the Black Sea city of Burgas overturned and burst into flames on Trakiya highway, near the second largest city of Plovdiv, in the wee hours Wednesday, killing 8 and injuring 20, two of them in critical condition.
Pressure is piling on the driver, who was behind the wheel at the time of the fatal crash on Bulgaria's Trakiya highway early on Wednesday, amid rising expectations that he will be left carrying the can for the accident whether or not he was to blame.
Svetoslav Dimitrov, 43, has been charged with recklessly causing the death of more than one person which, according to the Penal Code, is punished with imprisonment from 5 to 15 years.
Prosecutors have ruled that he is not likely to hide or commit another crime. He has been released on bail of BGN 5,000 and can not leave the country. But the man says he does not have the money to pay the bail.
Interestingly the owner of the company, operating the bus, which crashed and claimed the lives of eight Bulgarians, has not been arrested yet, leading many to believe that the driver will have to bear the brunt.
