Thousands of Libyans could be left without food or shelter as conditions deteriorate in the Libyan port city of Misrata, Kristalina Georgieva, Bulgarian EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, has alarmed.
Furthermore, the flow of migrants elsewhere in Libya was increasing, with thousands more fleeing into Tunisia in recent days.
"What we're seeing is a continuous worsening of the situation in Misrata. We have had interruptions in the provision of humanitarian assistance yesterday, no access whatsoever today," Georgieva told the European Voice.
As a last resort, the EU has offered to provide military support to ensure humanitarian aid deliveries to Misrata and other locations, if requested by the United Nations, the EU Commissioner revealed.
She pointed out that other regions of Libya are also suffering from the humanitarian crisis. "So much of the attention is focused on Misrata that we may lose sight of other locations," she said. Fuel and water supplies to the rebel-held east were precarious, according to her, while in the west, thousands of refugees were streaming across the border to Tunisia and other neighboring countries such as Niger, where more than 60,000 have arrived since the civil war began
