A team from Guinness World Records is arriving in Bulgaria's city of Pazardzhik on June 1 to judge if it has the longest bench in the world.
The announcement was made Tuesday by Pazardzhik Mayor, Todor Popov, who had invited the Guinness experts.
The bench, in the city's park "Svoboda" (Freedom), is being built for a year now. It is 1 015-meter long and can seat about 2 020 people at once.
The longest benches so far are in Poland (613 m), and Japan (461), but there is no known bench longer than a kilometer, as is the one in Pazardzhik.
The design belongs to architect Dimitar Boyukliev. The bench does not disconnect anywhere and goes around the trees.
The contractor is "Vodno Stopanstvo," working on the order of the City Hall. The idea belongs to prominent local businessman, Blago Solov, owner of the large furniture-store chain "Yavor."
The cost is estimated at BGN 120 000 while the Guinness prize is USD 86 000, the Mayor says.
