A group of bikers from the Russian Night Wolves club laid wreaths Sunday the Shipka Memorial of the 1877-8 Russo-Turkish War that resulted in Bulgaria's liberation from the Ottoman Empire.

The Shipka summit in the Stara Planina mountain range was the site of a decisive battle in the war, during which many Russian soldiers and Bulgarian fighers fell.

The 40 men travelled on their bikes all the way from Russia to take part in a multitude of historic celebrations across Bulgaria.

Sunday they commemorated not only Bulgaria's liberation, but also the 135th anniversary of the April Uprising that preceded it.

The Night Wolves had arrived in Ruse on April 29 and travelled to Bulgaria's medieval capital of Veliko Tarnovo, to take part in celebrations of the 1330 anniversary of the founding of the Bulgarian state in 681.

Monday the Russian rockers are back to Tarnovo and then on to their homeland.
