The unrest in the Middle East is the most significant historical change after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Bulgaria's Foreign Affairs Minister, Nikolay Mladenov, believes.

Mladenov made the statement Thursday in Berlin, during the informal summit of the NATO foreign ministers.

The first session was dedicated to the situation in Libya. Bulgaria's top diplomat applauded the participation of States, partners of NATO, in the military operation in Libya – Qatar, Morocco, Sweden, the Ukraine, Jordan and United Arab Emirates, stressing on their contribution to other important missions of the Alliance.

"The developments in the Middle East are a demonstration of peoples' desire to live free; to actively participate in the rule of their countries; to have more opportunities for doing business," Mladenov stated. He informed his colleagues about his recent trip to Syria and Yemen, voicing strong concern about the situation in both countries.

The Minister vowed Bulgaria is going to have its own contribution in the weapons embargo on Libya and will reinstate its Consular Office in Benghazi. He reminded of the country's effort in evacuating hundreds of Egyptians from the Libyan capital Tripoli.

The summit continues with a meeting of ISAF.

Mladenov is to hold talks later with his New Zealand counterpart, Murray Stuart McCully.
