The Sofia International Airport has registered a 3% increase of the number of serviced passengers in the first quarter of 2011, compared to the same period of 2010, which was a record year for the airport.

From the 778 955 passengers, who used the airport in the first 3 months of 2011, 39 596 have been traveling inside the country – to and from Varna and Burgas, which is 8 000 or 25% more, compared to the first three months of 2010.

The data was released Thursday by the Airport's management.

Those who used regular international flights were with 22 300 more. Foreign airlines registered a 4% increase; Bulgarian ones – 3%.

In the first quarter of 2011, most passengers used Bulgaria Air, Wizz Air, Lufthansa, easyJet, Austrian Airlines, and Czech Airlines. Wizz Air had 30% more passengers on annual basis, Lufthansa - 22%, Swiss International - 27%, while the Ukrainian AeroSvit is the record-holder, doubling the number of passengers and flights between Sofia and Kiev.

In the first three months of the year 11 146 airplanes took off or landed at Sofia Airport, which is 1.8% compared to the same period of 2011. The processed cargo is 3 667 tons, compared with 3 493 tons, which is 5% more.

The Airport marks the beginning of its summer schedule with a new direct flight between Sofia and Malaga, Spain, offered by Wizz Air on Mondays.
