About 670,000 Tons of Food Are Disposed of by Bulgarians Every Year
In Bulgaria, nearly 670,000 tons of food goes to the trash every year.
The traditional spring cleaning has been scheduled for Saturday, with Bulgarians across the country taking care not only of their homes, but also of public spaces in their towns.
The campaign is not just the product of self-organization on the part of citizens, but is also supported by the municipal authorities.
In a somewhat rare and symbolic act, dozens have walked out in major cities, including capital Sofia, to tidy up the notoriously unclean areas between residential buildings, and also to take care of some more high-profile places downtown.
The campaign also includes the planting of young trees and taking care of the other vegetation.
Some people who engaged in the clean up have commented that it is somewhat ridiculous to take care of one's environment just on one day of the year and then be careless for the rest.
