Enterprising Bulgarians have abducted a Griffon vulture in the Stara Planina mountains, intending to ask a ransom for it.

The vulture was released in the Sinite Kamani park near Sliven in eastern Stara Planina and has been sighted near Montant in western Stara Planina.

Bulgarian nationals of Roma ethnicity caught the bird on December 15, after learning that it is an endangered species and could be precious, report the Zeleni Balkani environmental NGO.

The hijackers have asked an unspecified amount for ransom, but Montana environmental authorities quickly reacted and recovered the Griffon vulture, which was hidden in a bag in a horsecart.

The bird was unhurt and was sent to adapt back to wildlife and be released.
