A 56-year-old Bulgarian woman, the wife of an employee of the Bulgarian Embassy in Germany's capital Berlin, has been caught shoplifting.
According to German media reports cited by Deutsche Welle, the woman is the wife of a Bulgarian diplomat, and she stole several cheap items from a store not far from the Bulgarian Embassy in Berlin. The German police, however, have refused to reveal more information about the perpetrator.
The Berliner Zeitung points out that the woman has nothing to fear as she is the wife of a diplomat and has immunity.
According to the Bulgarian channel bTV, however, the woman who shoplifted is the wife of a worker from the technical staff of the Bulgarian Embassy in Berlin.
The Bulgarian Embassy in Berlin is quoted as saying that the case is being investigated but bTV further reports that "the case has been closed without consequences and is more likely a matter of misunderstanding."
The Berliner Zeitung reminds the case of former Bulgarian Ambassador to Germany Nikolay Apostolov, who in 2004 had to leave after a scandal he caused when he refused to pull over at the request of German police.
