The flood situation in the Bulgarian capital Sofia, caused by torrential rains on Saturday, is under control and returning to normal, Mayor Yordanka Fandakova, reports.

Parts of the "Lomsko Shosse" road and the capital's beltway, which were under water, are now being cleaned and will open for traffic any time now, according to Fandakova, who says the problems experienced by Sofia's residents were triggered only by the inclement weather and no human factor was involved.

The Mayor explained the Saturday flooding of a large section of the southern loop of the newly-built Sofia Beltway, which disrupted the entire traffic in the capital was the result of landslides, fallen rocks and trees from the nearby mountain, which clogged the drains. The road in under warranty and if it is found the flooding was the result of poor construction, the company which built it, will take care of repairs, Fandakova says.

In addition to the lasting torrential rains, the flooding in certain Sofia districts can be attributed to the lack of adequate sewerage to take part of the waters, according to the Mayor.

The City Hall is to examine all reports about crisis situations in different parts of Sofia in order to plan measures to prevent them in the future.

Meanwhile, the National Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences lifted the code orange alert for the entire territory of the country. The current code is green.
