The railway line from Bulgaria's capital Sofia to Kulata on the Greek border has been closed for traffic as a result of a landslide caused by the torrential rains.
The landslide that affected the rail line occurred Saturday night near the town of Dupnitsa. Parts of Dupnitsa have been flooded as a result of the rising of the Dzherman River. The landslide itself has not been caused by the river but by rain water flowing down a mountain slope.
It is unclear when the line will be reopened; this situation affects the trains from Sofia to Blagoevgrad and the rest of Southwest Bulgaria, as well as to Thessaloniki in Greece, announced the state railway company BDZ.
The train traffic between Sofia and the city of Pernik, 30 km to the south, has also been disrupted as the railway line is under water near the village of Dragichevo, announced the Mayor of Pernik, Rositsa Yanakieva.
Earlier on Saturday Yanakieva declared a partial emergency situation over the floods in parts of the Pernik Municipality.
