LEADING UK MEDIA ASK STOYANOV ABOUT MACEDONIA

Politics | July 29, 2001, Sunday // 00:00

President Stoyanov had a working breakfast with journalists of major international media based in the UK, including BBC, `The Economist`, `The Daily Telegraph`, `The Financial Times`, `The Guardian`, and Reuters. The press was interested above all in Bulgaria`s position on the developments in Macedonia. President Stoyanov reiterated his position that Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski`s arguments deserve more careful consideration and that ethnic Albanians must be strongly advised against taking up arms the minute they experience a setback in the negotiations. Asked to formulate his country`s position on Macedonia, particularly on the recognition of the nation and its language, Stoyanov said, `No serious politician, no serious political force or citizen of Bulgaria questions Macedonia`s sovereignty. We wish our neighbours to cope with the current crisis by themselves, assert their statehood, reinforce their democratic institutions, and join the ranks of wealthy democratic states. Bulgaria, too, will benefit from that`. Answering a question about a possible spread of the conflict, Stoyanov said he is `optimistic and this scenario seems unlikely at present. However, we should take care to settle conflicts at the moment of their inception`. Many questions were related to the situation in Bulgaria, the recent parliamentary elections and the new government. Commenting on Simeon Saxe-Coburg`s election victory and the publicity given to it internationally, Stoyanov said, `any publicity is good. The new government ought to use this interest in a positive manner`.
