Inside Bulgaria's Easter Celebrations: Traditions Passed Through Generations
Today marks the joyous celebration of Easter, one of the most significant holidays in the Orthodox Christian calendar.
The Norwegian government will provide financial support for preserving Bulgaria's cultural heritage.
The Norwegian help is expected to materialize by 2012.
This was announced by Tove Skarstain, Norwegian Ambassador in Bulgaria. Skarstain and her American colleague James Warlick visited the cult complex at the ancient Thracian city of Perperikon in the Rhodoppe Mountains as a response to an invitation by high-profile Bulgarian archaeologist Prof. Nikolay Ovcharov.
"Bulgaria has a very ancient history and Perperikon is the best possible showcase," Skarsten commented.
Recently, the funding for the archaeological excavations that led to the much celebrated and much debated recent discovery of relics of St. John the Baptist in Bulgaria was also provided by Norway.
The excavations on the St. Ivan Island in the Black Sea near Sozopol was funded with a total of EUR 584 028, which was 90% the total cost of the project.
Norway plans also give Bulgaria financial support for projects focused mostly on environment and energy efficiency issues.
