Russians celebrated Sunday the 69th anniversary of the historic November 7, 1941 parade on the Red Square in Moscow.
The 1941 parade was a landmark event for Russian military spirit, as it was staged at a point when the German siege of Moscow had all but broken into the gates of the city. The Nazis had vowed to win the Battle of Moscow precisely on November 7, the anniversary of the Russian Revolution.
In 1941, Soldiers marched straight from the parade to the front lines. The event is said to have had a dramatic effect on the military spirit of Russian fighers.
Sunday the event gathered thousands at the Red Square to commemorate the selfless bravery of those who fell.
Among them were 40 veterans who marched in the original November 7, 1941 parade.
High-ranking representatives of authorities, including new Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin, MPs, representatives of the President and the Ministry of Defense, were present and laid wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
November 7 is also unofficially celebrated by some Russians as the anniversary of the Great Russian Revolution, 1917, which culminated on October 25 old style.
