About 3,000 people have been evacuated from the Indonesian Java Island because of potential eruption of volcano Mount Merapi.

Indonesia has raised a third-degree alert and warned villagers in a radius of 10 km to move to safer ground, the BBC reported.

About 3,000 people have already been accommodated in temporary camps. About 19,000 more people are expected to be evacuated.

Officials announced that the activity at the volcano, in the central part of Java Island, had increased significantly over the weekend.

Merapi is one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes in Indonesia and has produced more lava flows than any other volcano in the world. It has been active for 10,000 years and has registered eruptions on average every four years, RIA Novosti has reported.
