German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been granted a doctor honoris causa title by the Bulgarian Ruse University "Angel Kanchev".
The title was presented to Merkel by the President of the Ruse University Hristo Beloev at a special ceremony in the National Archaeological Museum in Sofia, shortly before Merkel received the highest Bulgarian state medal "Stara Planina, 1st Degree."
In her speech, Merkel said she sees the distinction by the Ruse Engineering University as a confirmation of the trend of educational and academic cooperation between Germany and Bulgaria.
She underscored the fact that there is a very high number of Bulgarian students in Germany – about 12 000, which ranked Bulgaria second only to China as the source country of foreign students in the Bundesrepublik.
The German Chancellor explicitly thanked the faculty and administration of the Ruse University for traveling all the way to Sofia to present her with the doctor honoris causa title. She was originally supposed to travel to the northeastern Danube city of Ruse to receive it but these plans were later dropped, allegedly over Bulgaria's bad road infrastructure.
Merkel said that she remembered the Ruse train station from her previous visit to the city of Ruse. This led Bulgarian Prime Minister Borisov to invite her for a visit to Ruse next year where she can see both the train station and the university so that its students "can enjoy her presence."
The faculty of the Ruse Engineering University granted Merkel the doctor honoris causa title "for her enormous contribution to the development of European education and scientific research." She has thus become the tenth doctor honoris causa of the Ruse University.
