Ed Miliband is the new leader of the British Labor Party after he triumphed over his elder brother David Miliband in Manchester on Saturday.

Ed beat David in the intra-party elections by a very narrow margin – 50.65% of the votes vs. 49.35%.

The Milibands, who received the most votes of the five candidates, needed the second, third and fourth preference votes from the supporters of Ed Balls, Andy Burnham and Diane Abbott, who finished third, fourth and fifth respectively, The Times reported.

It's believed that the weight of the unions ended up swinging it for Ed despite David leading after the first three rounds of voting.

In his victory speech, the 40-year-old ex-Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, said he never thought he would one day lead the Labor Party when he joined it 23 years ago.

"Today we draw a line under this contest and move forward united as a team," said Ed Miliband said after beating his brother, ex-Foreign Secretary David Miliband.

Recent UK polls place the opposition Labor Party close to the Conservative-Liberal Democrat Coalition.
