Bulgaria announced it is planning a BGN 1.4 M campaign to clear up its smeared by corruption scandals image. The initiative will include visits by foreign journalists to the country.

"We want to show that now we are working efficiently and with full transparency," Tomislav Donchev, the minister in charge of EU funds, commented.

The bill for the campaign will be footed by EU.

Bulgaria has absorbed EUR 950 M of EU's assistance since it acceded to the European Union in 2007, according to the minister.

Bulgarians have pinned lots of hopes on the center-right government of Boyko Borisov and Minister Donchev, who is expected to control the proper use of European Union subsidies, prevent fraud and clean up its record with the EU.

The European Commission froze in 2008 a total of EUR 825 M in pre-accession aid to Bulgaria and subsequently axed EUR 220 M over corruption concerns.

Bulgaria's new center-right government, which swept the elections in July, has made attempts to shake off the country's reputation for rampant graft and crime.

Three ministers from the previous government have been charged with abuse of power and embezzlement and are expected to appear in court soon.
