Bulgarian Muslims have now approached Chief Prosecutor, Boris Velchev, in their latest attempt to resolve the crisis with the country's Chief Mufti post.

During a meeting with Mustafa Ali Hadzhi, who was elected by the October 2009 National Muslim Conference as Chief Mufti, Velchev had been asked to help making the conference legal before the court.

Tensions have been shaking the Muslim community in Bulgaria since May 12, 2010 when the Supreme Court of Cassations ruled to annul the decisions of the conference, triggering a wave of protest rallies among Muslims across the country.

Last week, after meeting with both Gendzhev and Hadzhi, Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, said the government would not interfere in the dispute.

Hadzhi explained Tuesday the reason to request a meeting with the Chief Prosecutor were Gendzhev's attempts to mislead the public and the institutions there is a court rule he is to be reinstated as Chief Mufti. According to Hadzhi, no court in Bulgaria has issued such decision, the Sofia Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Cassations have only said the conference was illegitimate, which does not automatically lead to Gendzhev coming back as Chief Mufti.

Hadzhi says Gendzhev had committed a crime by forging documents which falsly state there was a meeting of the Supreme Muslim Religious Council in 2006 to elect regional muftis. Velchev had been notified of the crime.
