Five people have perished in a horrific car crash on the Hemus Highway near Bulgaria's Varna.

The accident happened Sunday afternoon after two cars driving in opposite directions made attempts to overtake those in front of them.

The road section in question has seen the highest number of car crashes causing death. This section has no crash barriers because it is supposed to serve as a reserve landing strip for the nearby Varna Airport.

The cars that crashed in a frontal collision had license plates from Varna and Veliko Tarnovo. Four of the total of six people in them died immediately; one man died on the way to the hospital. The sixth person, a woman, is in a Varna hospital in critical condition.

The rescue units are working to establishment the identity of the casualties and have started cutting the smashed vehicles in order to remove the dead bodies trapped inside.
