The team of former German tennis star Boris Becker beat the team of Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov in a charity match during the Zagorka Tennis Cup finals in Sofia.
German tennis great Boris Becker landed in Sofia Sunday afternoon on his first visit to Bulgaria after he participated in a Bulgarian tennis tournament at age 16.
Becker was teamed together with former Bulgarian women's tennis star Magdalena Maleeva to face Borisov and another former Bulgarian pro, Iliya Kushlev.
Even though the Borisov team came in the lead 3:1 games, Becker and Maleeva managed to reverse the one-set match winning 6:4 at the end.
“I am glad that your Prime Minister not only likes tennis but is also bold enough to play against me. Perhaps I will let him win,” Becker told the media before the start of the match.
He said the invitation for a charity match by the organizers of the Zagorka Tennis Cup had been a pleasant surprise for him.
Becker and Borisov awarded the winners in the 2010 edition of the tournament – Tihomir Grozdanov and Ventsislav Ivanov. The PM announced the Bulgarian Tennis Federation will receive BGN 1 M from the state in order to organize a “quality tennis tournament.”
