In his speech, President Parvanov called for consistent and active state commitment and financial support for education and science. He said that money spent for education and research is not just money spent, but money invested in Bulgaria’s future.

All four Bulgarian participants in the Olympiad, held in Waterloo, Canada, came back with medals. Rumen Hristov and Vladislav Haralampiev returned from the Informatics Olympiad with gold medals, while Atanas Atanasov brought home silver and Mihail Kovachev bronze.

The International Olympiad in Informatics is the world’s most prestigious high-school contest in computer science. The first such competition was held in 1989 in Bulgaria and the country traditionally scores good performances.

Friday President Parvanov wished Bulgaria’s medalists continuing success in education and their future careers, calling them not to turn their backs on Bulgaria should they decide to work and study elsewhere.
