Bulgarian runner Vanya Stambolova won the silver medal at 400 m hurdles at the European Athletics Championship in Barcelona.

Stambolova finished at 53.82 sec, which is also a national record, behind Russian Natalya Antyukh at 52.92 sec.

The Bulgarian runner had strong rivals in the final run and started slowly, trailing at number 5 by the final 100 meters, but then mustered an unbelievable final sprint to land second.

This is Bulgaria's only success in this year's European Athletics Campionship.

In 2006 Stambolova won world silver in 400 m indoor running and European gold, again in 400 m running.
