Bulgaria's prime minister has praised his Russian counterpart for the dialogue they have as the two countries are struggling to come to an agreement on a number of large-scale energy projects.
“I think that the dialogue I have with Vladimir Putin is pretty good. He understands me much better that the Bulgarian politicians from the opposition,” Boyko Borisov said on Sunday.
In his words the two sides will consider all opportunities for cooperation in the energy sector so that “no one gets hurt”.
The statement comes just to days after Borisov and his Russian counterpart Putin agreed in a phone conversation.that Russia’s Deputy PM Viktor Zubkov visit Bulgaria July 6 for talks on the large-scale joint energy projects.
Borisov and Putin have talked over the phone Friday discussing the situation of the three joint energy projects – the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline, the South Stream gas transit pipeline, and the Belene Nuclear Power Plant as well as other matters of the bilateral relations, announced Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the Russian PM, as cited by ITAR-TASS.
Peskov pointed out that Borisov and Putin focused their telephone conversation explicitly on the Belene NPP and South Stream, among the other questions.
Recent statements by Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov that his country would be pulling out from two other high-profile energy projects, involving Russia – the Belene NPP and the Burgas-Alexandrupolis oil pipeline – have caused confusion and dismay in Russia.
The Bulgarian Prime Minister has also vowed an investigation of the renegotiated contracts with the Russian energy giant Gazprom for Russian gas supplies, signed in 2006.
He has made it clear that Bulgaria was going to try to renegotiate the terms under which it receives natural gas from Russia, a statement that came the very same day that natural gas prices in the country went up by a staggering 25%.
