Customs officers at the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint on the border with Turkey seized 108.860 kg of marijuana in 111 packages on Friday. The drug was found in a secret compartment of an Albanian-registered truck travelling from Albania to Turkey without cargo. The Albanian driver and the truck were detained. The case is being investigated. This is the largest marijuana haul in Bulgaria this year. Authorities seized record quantity of nearly 230 kg heroin also at border checkpoint Andreevo during the week. The drug was found in a Turkish truck. The driver, a Turkish citizen whom officials did not identify, could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison if found guilty of drug smuggling. Bulgarian customs officers have seized more than 410 kilograms (902 pounds) of heroin so far this year.
