An unknown perpetrators stole BGN 39 000 from the Sts. Peter and Pavel Monastery near the town of Lyaskovets, in the Veliko Tarnovo Region.
The information was reported Saturday by the Veliko Tarnovo police.
The theft happened Friday afternoon, when a man entered the cell of an 84-year old nun and took the money from an unlocked metal cabinet.
The nun had asked the man, who had gloves, but no mask, if he needed help, and he told her he found what he was looking for.
The nuns called the police hours later. The Orthodox Church said Saturday the money was collected from donations to do repair works at the monastery. It is still unclear why the sum had been kept in an unlocked cabinet in the nun’s cell.
The Sts. Peter and Pavel Monastery is one of the 14 near Veliko Tarnovo, built during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. It is on the Arbanassi plateau, on high rocks, 6 km northeast from the city.
