Just as the rest of Europe, Bulgaria marks Sunday May 9th, the Day of Europe, and 65 years since the end of World War II.

The double holiday was celebrated with the raising of the EU flag at a formal ceremony attended by Vice President Angel Marin and Defense Minister Anyu Angelov; Bulgarian ombudsman Ginyo Ganev, and Socialist Party leader Sergey Stanishev were also present.

Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov was unable to attend as he went to Moscow for the Victory Day parade together with other foreign leaders.

Representatives of the countries which defeated Nazi Germany in World War II laid flowers at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier in downtown Sofia.

“Dear compatriots, it is with great pleasure that I congratulate you for the Day of Europe, and I sincerely thank you for all your efforts over the recent years, which led to our full membership in this great, prosperous community, based on solidarity and making even the smallest nation strong,” says the official statement of the Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov on the occasion of May 9.

It reminds that May 9, 2010, marks the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman which set the beginning of the European unification.

“The only enemy we have to overcome is the stereotypes, ways of thinking, and lack of confidence in our own capacities,” says the PM wishing Bulgarians to become more ambitious, bolder, and more unified.
