Bulgaria: Bulgarian Court Lets ‘Untouchable’ Mobsters Go

Only one of the alleged gangsters arrested last week in “The Untouchable” Operation has been left behind bars by the Sofia City Court.

26-year-old Zlelyaz Ivanov was left in jail Sunday night, while Ivaylo Yordanov (38) was released on a BGN 5 000 bail, and Borislav Hristov (26) – on a BGN 8 000 bail.

A total of 16 persons were arrested last Thursday on suspicions they are part of an organized group dealing with financial crimes. Of those, only five were charged but two were released on a BGN 3 000 bail each on Friday.

According to judge Vesislava Ivanova, it can assumed that Zlelyaz Ivanov was involved in the setting up of a number of firms which carried out not economic activities. The court also assumed that the other two defendants might be associated with this activity but did not considering such a conclusion sufficient in order to leave them behind bars.

According to their lawyers, the prosecutors have no evidence that there is a leader of the alleged organized crime group, which further suggests that there is no group at all.

The two defendants who were released on bail have been revealed to have criminal records.
