Bulgaria’s Socialist Party (BSP) has come out in full support of striking medical staff, encouraging them to continue their struggle to the end.

The party urged the doctors not to be satisfied with partial promises but to continue to fully assert their rights, in a statement issued by them on Monday.

It is unprecedented for doctors, nurses and all those working in the health sector not to have received their rightfully earned salaries for the fourth consecutive month, the declaration states.

The healthcare system is in complete chaos, according to the BSP.

"There is no clarity and transparency as to what funds are received into the system, what and to whom it is being paid; there is an weakness of management and petty, irresponsible dodging of issues affecting the Bulgarian citizens," the Socialist party’s announcement states.

BSP argue that the reserves of the health fund have sufficient resources, and remind that the Socialists have repeatedly offered for them to be unblocked.

Sergey Stanishev, the BSP leader, stated on Monday that he is expecting a meeting with Tsetska Tsacheva, the parliamentary Speaker, where, once again, his party will push for immediate consideration of the bill they had presented to Parliament on February 26.

He declared himself totally against prime Minister Boyko Borisov's suggestion that healthcare insurance contributions should be increased.

"BSP has declared against increasing healthcare contributions by 2% - this measure weighs down even more people and transfers away the responsibility of the state," stated the declaration.

The immediate payment of money earned by doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists and all those working in health care is insisted upon in the document.

BSP further demands that the government should present its vision for reforms in the health sector, and to provide for them financially.

General Practitioners from Kyustendil, Dupnitsa and Razgrad have gone on strike Monday over unpaid funds and the Bulgarian government’s health reform plans.

GPs from Sofia, Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo and Shumen are set to join the strike on Tuesday, with reports that Varna GPs may also leave their doctor's surgeries for the day.
