To GM or Not to GM: A Few Words in Defense of Genetic Modification
"It's the poor who suffer" due to European reluctance to GMOs, since solutions which could help meet needs of the poor "are stopped by the rich"...
Bulgaria’s rightist Blue Coalition is not going to support the amendments of the Genetically Modified Organisms Act.
The second reading is forthcoming this week and Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB), one of the two parties in the Blue Coalition, say they want the Act restored in its initial text.
If the amendments pass, they will allow growing some GMOs on farming lands while the ban for protected territories remains, but the distance between the two will be less than 30 km. GMOs are going to be permissible for tobacco, vine, cotton, roses, wheat and all fruit and vegetables.
The Environment Ministry insists the ease of the legislation is imposed by the European Commission.
The amendments have caused outrage amongst local environmental NGOs who argued that harmonization with the EU is necessary, but it should not be at the expense of Bulgarian nature and farmers.
