The Spanish ship “Las Palmas,” which sustained serious damage, has been able to reach the port of Ushuaia in Argentina, the Bulgarian news agency BTA reports Friday.
On Thursday, the leader of the 18th Bulgarian Antarctic expedition, Prof. Hristo Pimpirev, informed via satellite phone that “Last Palmas” has sustained very serious damage when its main engine failed in the Drake Passage.
The ship, which delivers supplies to the Bulgarian and Spanish Antarctic bases, had 2 Bulgarian explorers onboard at the time of the incident, but they are reported as feeling well and their lives are not in any danger.
The ship will be repaired in Ushuaia, the most southern city in the world, and will then continue on its way to the Antarctic. The repairs are, however, throwing both expeditions off schedule. For this expedition the Bulgarian explorers count only on “Las Palmas” for transport and delivery of supplies. The last group of them is leaving Sofia Monday and they were supposed to bring fresh food to the base, but because of the delay those Bulgarian explorers, already in the Antarctic will have to live on pasta and beans for some time, the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute informs.
The Bulgarians from the first group of the 30th Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition are still at the Uruguayan base on King George Island and have not sailed with the Chilean ship Galvarino to the Bulgarian polar base St. Kliment Ohridski on Livingston Island.
